I have always had a passion for Science and helping others. So, for me, becoming a Science Teacher was a no-brainer.Β
Why Science? I believe it's the subject that relates to every person. We are all human - we all think, eat, move, laugh, cry...we all live and Science is life, so knowing about it means that we can take the best care of ourselves, others and the environment.Β
I am a Secondary School Science Teacher at one of Australia's leading independent private schools, currently in my 15th year of teaching and specialising in Year 9/10 Science and VCE Chemistry. My experience extends to Science Coordinating and being a Pastoral Care Leader where my focus was on the academic, health and wellbeing needs of over 500 Year 9 students.Β
What I value most is hard work. It was only through this that I was able to get to where I am today. I wasn't a gifted student (and am thankful for that) because working through my difficulties with Science taught me everything I know about learning, studying, teaching and problem solving. So if I was struggling, why didn't I give up all those years ago? It certainly would have been the easier option! I didn't because I absolutely loved what I was learning about. I came to appreciate that, so long as you have passion and the determination to keep trying, then you can work through any of the hardships that come your way. This is something that I emphasise to my students and apply in many aspects of my life. I hate to think where I would be today if I simply gave up, however, this never was (or will be) an option.
When teaching my students, I often reflect on my own schooling experience and ask myself 'how would I have wanted to be taught about this concept'? I then use this information to structure my lessons and activities with the aim of developing my students' understanding and confidence. I also like to incorporate the use of analogies as I find these effective in understanding new and unfamiliar information (if you can associate this with something you are already familiar with).Β Β
During COVID, I gained experience in using a range of programs and activities to facilitate an effective online learning environment so my students could achieve closer to their potential. I am now using this knowledge to help others outside my classroom by providing virtual tutoring using the Microsoft Teams and OneNote platforms, alongside additional supporting resources and notes. My program is unique in that I also offer additional virtual support outside of our session.Β
